May 25, 2010 - Newsletter & Tiger Times See Mrs. Schmidt's notes below Kid Quote of the week! On a discussion about what you like and dislikes about school: Mr. Lake Juniors - Mrs. Carter Dear Parents, As we continue to patiently wait for summer weather, the students are totally ready for summer break!! We have many tasks to complete before the end of the year, so I'm hoping that they hang in there for the remaining ten and half days! This is just a friendly reminder to wait until Family Night or the day before to bring in at-home projects. Unfortunately, there is just not enough space in my room to display them until Project Night. Thank you! Leslie McDaniels came in as a guest speaker from OSU last week with her Traveling Oregon Wood Magic Show. She brought many examples of wood to share like Pine-Sol, a box of Trix, a baseball, and toothpaste. The class was involved in a number of experiments proving the strength of wood. For the last experiment, they were given a wood stick and a small container of liquid soap. The stick was dipped into the soap and when they blew through the other end of the stick, a long stream of bubbles formed!! Leslie was a very engaging speaker and the class was involved every minute of the presentation! The two Junior classes set out on foot Thursday afternoon in the drizzling rain to discover the history of Mosier! A rotation was organized, so that each class would have time at the Mosier library, the Mosier post office and the historic Mosier House. Lark, our local postmaster, invited us in and shared stories about the Mosier bank (which is now the post office) and one story about how the bank teller was locked in the safe after a robbery! Jan Leininger, our local historian and retired Mosier School teacher, was waiting for us in the living room of the Mosier House dressed in a blue calico pioneer dress. She shared facts about the Jonah Mosier family and how Jefferson Mosier, who was Jonah Mosier's son, built the Mosier House. Jan was well-prepared with photographs, knowledge about how and when Mosier was settled and even the history of her own family who came to Mosier in the early days. We were then invited to tour the house with Cindy Hunter, the caretaker. If you've never had a chance to see the Mosier House, I would highly recommend it. Over the past ten years, the Koerner brothers have restored it to its original state and it is just amazing inside and out! Lastly, we walked back to the Mosier library, where Glenna McCargar was waiting for us to share the history of the library and to encourage the children to come back to check out books this summer! We so appreciate all the local volunteers who put the "community" in Mosier Community School!! Thank you to Jan Leininger, Lark, Glenna and Cindy Hunter for taking time to teach our children!! Sadly, Sandy the gerbil died last week. She was the sister of Tink-a-link, who died earlier in the year. Our student council representatives, Maddy and Saranda, led the procession down to the base of the tree outside our window during morning recess. There, she was buried beside her sister with a few words said. She will be greatly missed. Digit and DJ, our new brown pair of gerbils, remain healthy and happy! This is our last newsletter of the year. Hard to believe! I want you to know what a pleasure it has been to teach your children throughout the year and how much I have enjoyed all the different personalities! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and encourage your children to read, read, read!! I'll see you in the Fall! Mrs. Carter Junior News - Mr. Barnard Dear Families, The last couple weeks of school are crazy! There's so much going on, so many reminders, so many things to do, etc. Before I get too into what to look forward to, I.E., summer, here are some highlights from last week: We went on a walking field trip throughout Mosier on Thursday. We visited the Post Office, Library, Mosier House and took a detour through the Thirsty Woman. Glenna at the library filled us in on the history of the building and its connection to the community. Lark told us a great story about how the post office used to be a bank and when it was robbed once by a group of bank robbers, the banker was locked in the safe but the thieves were apprehended shortly afterward on the historic highway because they got a flat tire. Jan Leininger shared many stories about her family's history in Mosier and the history of the Mosier House Bed & Breakfast in the Mosier House's living room. Between our stop at the post office and library, we were caught by rain. Barry Rumsey was nice enough to let us wait it out in the Thirsty Woman. It was there I read from one of our read-aloud books, "B is for Beaver: An Oregon Alphabet". It was also a great connection to the history walk because the Thirsty Woman used to be the Mosier YWCA and is one of only two buildings to survive the fire 0f 1924. The other building is the post office. Thank you to Glenna, Lark, Jan, Cindy Hunter, and Barry for making it a fulfilling afternoon. During Wednesday afternoon, the school watched a performance from the Phoenix Theater, a group of high school drama students from Hood River High School. They performed a variety of short skits with themes about friendship, recycling, and global awareness. All of the students loved the performance from the talented group of high schoolers. We are continuing to work hard on our written essay for the thematic unit! Here's what's coming up and what to look forward to: ALL OF MY LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BACK THURSDAY! I will be charging you for lost books with real money, not $B Bucks. ALL OF MS. HARMON'S BOOKS FROM THE SCHOOL LIBRARY ARE DUE BACK TOMORROW! Tomorrow is a scheduled early release, Deb! The 4th grade sleepover is scheduled for Tuesday the 8th of June. More information will follow... The Spring performance will be Thursday, June 3rd at 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM. This is also Family Night. The last day of school is Wednesday June 9th. The assembly will be held at 8:30 AM in the gymnasium and the family picnic will begin at 10:45 AM. 4th quarter report cards will be handed out on this day. AT-HOME PROJECTS ARE DUE NEXT TUESDAY, JUNE 1ST! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and encourage your children to read, read, read!! Mrs. Conley Senior News - Mrs. Woodward Greetings! It's been quite a week! We were all sure that Spring was finally here, and Mother Nature pulled a quick one on us and sent the rain, wind and snow back! We're gearing up for the Spring Performance and the display of our thematic Unit materials. My students turned in the rough drafts of their Tribal Research papers last week. I edited each one and then discussed needed changes or additions with my students. They have all worked very hard on these papers and have shown a lot of growth since the beginning of the year. I am sure that they have learned an immense amount about the native peoples of the Pacific Northwest through their papers, hands-on projects in the classroom, their home projects and presentations by local Native Americans. I hope to see you all here for the Spring Musical and Thematic Unit displays on the evening of June 3rd. In Math 5, we will complete all of the lessons/concepts in our text book this week. My students worked so hard all year to master the concepts presented. I feel confident that they are prepared to enter Course I next year. We will take a final assessment later in the week ! In Reading Mastery 5, we are completing the materials in our text in addition to finishing the reading of our current novels for Literature groups. Once the novels have been completed, we'll create some original board games based on the novels. By having my students do that kind of project, I can assess what literary elements they have mastered. They will have to develop questions based on the story along with the correct answers! It's been truly amazing to watch their confidence and enjoyment of reading grow throughout the year! As many of you already know, tomorrow evening is the Sixth Grade Sleepover here at MCS. We'll enjoy pizza and soda for dinner along with a movie, popcorn, along with indoor and outdoor games. A good time should be had by all! Please give me a call if you have any questions or concerns about anything we're doing in the classroom! Sincerely, Sandy Woodward |
