Kindergarten News - Ms. Thompson

What happened last week?

End of the Year Information

This week's newsletter will provide you with the latest information to keep you and your child on track as the year winds down. The ABC books will be returned in Tuesday folders this week with a "Star Student Award", if your child completed the entire book. If there is a post-it(s) attached to a page, these are pages that haven't been completed. Upon completion, I will look through it once again and fill out a little "Star Student Award" for your child. Thank you!

Library books are due back to Ms. Harmon this Wednesday, May 26th. The early date helps Ms. Harmon put her library back in order, figure out which books are missing, and send home reminders to those who haven't returned their books yet. Please send your student with their library book by Wednesday, May 26th. Thank you!

Step Up to First Grade Day is Wednesday, June 2nd from 12 - 1 pm for the kindergarteners. This is a time where kindergarten will have the opportunity to get to meet one of the three primary teachers. The class that your child will have the opportunity to be in will not be their classroom teacher for the 2010-2011 school. Students will be numbered in random order and sent up to join the first graders for one whole hour. At that time, I will be welcoming the kindergarteners of next year and meeting their families.

Reading slip party will be held on Monday, June 7th during lunch time. Students who received 50 points or more from their Tuesday folder reading slips will be invited to a banana split party. Those who didn't make the 50 point cut-off will be given a popsicle to enjoy. You still have two weeks to turn in those reading slips to earn some more points, so bring them in!

Kindergarten graduation will be held in the kindergarten classroom on Monday, June 7th at 1:15pm to 2:00pm. We will be making invitations to give to you as a more formal invite. We will also be making graduation hats to wear for the occasion. Also, your child will be given a diploma during the graduation ceremony so bring your cameras if you would like some photos. And one last note, some snacks will be provided to encourage socialization and partying following the ceremony. Hope to see you there!

On the last day of school, Wednesday, June 9th, there will be an all school awards/end of the year assembly at 8:30am. Parents and families are welcome to come. Following the assembly, the whole school will participate in field games and other various activities outside before the big barbecue starts. There will be more information to come on the barbecue, so be checking the Tuesday folder.

The little leveled readers that I have been loaning out in the manilla envelopes need to be returned by Thursday, May 27th. Following that date, I will be sending home notes to families who did not return the little leveled readers and I will be asking for $4.00 for each book that was not returned. These books do belong to the school and will be used for future years. Thank you!

Mark your calendars for June 3rd’s Family Night and Spring Performance. The spring performance will have two shows, one at 9:30am and another at 6:30pm after Family Night where projects will be displayed in the classrooms. Every child should make both performances, both morning and evening. Also, the “Fantastic Fairy Tale and Folk Tale” home project is due the morning of Family Night from your child in order for their stories to be set up appropriately for viewing in the classroom. I am excited to see their stories they’ve worked so hard on!

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a great weekend! What beautiful weather we have had!

We had the privilege of working with a few local community members painting bats to be attached to bat houses that will be used at the Rock Creek area last Thursday. A huge thank you to Kathy Fitzpatrick and Tuck Contreras. We had a blast and the bats look amazing!

This weeks spelling rule is as follows:
oo says two things:

Sometimes oo says /oo/ as in boot.

Sometimes oo says /oo/ as in book.

Please note that this is the last spelling rule of the year and the last set of homework to be assigned.

Early release this Wednesday the 26th. Students are released at 12:30. Please make note of the upcoming No-School days. Friday, May 28th and May 31st we will not have school, due to Memorial Day and a conference comp day. Enjoy and have fun!

We will be finishing up the Neighborhood Nature unit this week. I am truly excited to see all of the home project plants. To recap, the children are to bring in their plant, even if it did not sprout and their journal of the growing process. Please remember that they are due by June 1st . I am looking forward to seeing their projects, as they have been talking a lot about them.

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming Spring Program. It is scheduled for Thursday June 3rd with two performances. The morning performance is at 9:30 A.M. and the evening performance will begin at 6:30 P.M. The home project display from the Neighborhood Nature unit will also be that evening in the classrooms from 5:30 until 6:15. I hope to see you all there. The children have worked very hard and they are eager to share it with all of you.

The last day of school will be Wednesday June 9th. The following is a schedule for that day:

8:30 All school assembly in the gym

9:30 Games on the playground

10:45 Family Picnic

12:00 Dismissal

Have a great week and enjoy the sunshine!

Dear Families,

Announcements

We will be having an art show in our classroom to showcase all of the art Mrs. Pickhardt has been doing with our class. The Nature Inspired Art Show will take place tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, May 26th from 11:45-12:30. We've scheduled the show so that you may take your child home with you at 12:30 since we have Early Release.

Our Shape Up Across Oregon party will take place this Thursday, May 27th. We will drive up to Mrs. Schmidt's house in Mosier at 11:45 and we will return to MCS just before 2:00pm in time for the buses. Please send your child to school with a bathing suit, a towel and good shoes for running (no flip flops please). If it rains on the 27th, our party will take place on the afternoon of Monday, June 7th. Thank you in advance for your help!

Family Night, Thursday, June 3rd, is just around the corner! Please have your child bring their Home Project (plant and journal) to school on Thursday (June 3rd) morning. You are all invited to our classroom from 5:30-6:15 to check out all of our Neighborhood Nature work. Our glass on glass mosaic will also be on display! At 6:15 we will all go downstairs to the gym for the all-school Spring Show. It will begin at 6:30 and is entitled "It's About Time". There will also be a morning performance at 9:30 that morning.

Mrs. Pickhard's last day will be on Tuesday! She will be at the Nature Inspired Art Show though so please wish her well if you attend. Shanda has been an incredible addition to Neighborhood Nature as well as to our class in general and I will miss her very much.

This will be the last week to earn reading points for the dessert party! This will also be the last week of homework for the year!

Early Release/Holidays:
We have Early Release this week so please make plans to pick your child up from school at 12:30 on Wednesday. MCS will be closed on Friday, May 28th and Monday, May 31st due to a work day for teachers and Memorial Day.

Ask About…

Have you heard about our tadpoles? We have three! Please be sure to ask all about our class pets (including their names!) and where they live in our classroom. I find the food the tadpoles eat to be particularly interesting so don't forget to inquire about this. We know all about the life cycle of a tadpole too so don't forget to ask about it!

In the News

This will be the last Tiger Times of the school year. Don't worry there will be plenty of information coming home the next two weeks to keep you busy!

This last week, the students have been working really hard on their "All About..." books. This will be a non-fiction book that includes table of contents, a diagram, a how two chapter, different types of... , and interesting facts. Each student chose something from our Neighborhood Nature unit to research further and then write about. The topic choices were interesting as no one chose to write about a plant. We have authors who are becoming experts on frogs, turtles, snakes, lizards, beavers, deer, snails, and butterflies.

Last Wednesday we had a the Phoenix Theater come visit the school. The theater group is from Hood River High School. They came and performed a number of skits for the school. It was interesting as there was very minimal dialog and they used very few props. It has initiated a lot of 'playing' around.

Important Dates

  • Wednesday May 26 Early Release

    Juniors - Mrs. Carter

    Dear Parents,

As we continue to patiently wait for summer weather, the students are totally ready for summer break!! We have many tasks to complete before the end of the year, so I'm hoping that they hang in there for the remaining ten and half days!

This is just a friendly reminder to wait until Family Night or the day before to bring in at-home projects. Unfortunately, there is just not enough space in my room to display them until Project Night. Thank you!

Leslie McDaniels came in as a guest speaker from OSU last week with her Traveling Oregon Wood Magic Show. She brought many examples of wood to share like Pine-Sol, a box of Trix, a baseball, and toothpaste. The class was involved in a number of experiments proving the strength of wood. For the last experiment, they were given a wood stick and a small container of liquid soap. The stick was dipped into the soap and when they blew through the other end of the stick, a long stream of bubbles formed!! Leslie was a very engaging speaker and the class was involved every minute of the presentation!

The two Junior classes set out on foot Thursday afternoon in the drizzling rain to discover the history of Mosier! A rotation was organized, so that each class would have time at the Mosier library, the Mosier post office and the historic Mosier House. Lark, our local postmaster, invited us in and shared stories about the Mosier bank (which is now the post office) and one story about how the bank teller was locked in the safe after a robbery! Jan Leininger, our local historian and retired Mosier School teacher, was waiting for us in the living room of the Mosier House dressed in a blue calico pioneer dress. She shared facts about the Jonah Mosier family and how Jefferson Mosier, who was Jonah Mosier's son, built the Mosier House. Jan was well-prepared with photographs, knowledge about how and when Mosier was settled and even the history of her own family who came to Mosier in the early days. We were then invited to tour the house with Cindy Hunter, the caretaker. If you've never had a chance to see the Mosier House, I would highly recommend it. Over the past ten years, the Koerner brothers have restored it to its original state and it is just amazing inside and out! Lastly, we walked back to the Mosier library, where Glenna McCargar was waiting for us to share the history of the library and to encourage the children to come back to check out books this summer! We so appreciate all the local volunteers who put the "community" in Mosier Community School!! Thank you to Jan Leininger, Lark, Glenna and Cindy Hunter for taking time to teach our children!!

Sadly, Sandy the gerbil died last week. She was the sister of Tink-a-link, who died earlier in the year. Our student council representatives, Maddy and Saranda, led the procession down to the base of the tree outside our window during morning recess. There, she was buried beside her sister with a few words said. She will be greatly missed. Digit and DJ, our new brown pair of gerbils, remain healthy and happy!

This is our last newsletter of the year. Hard to believe! I want you to know what a pleasure it has been to teach your children throughout the year and how much I have enjoyed all the different personalities! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and encourage your children to read, read, read!!

I'll see you in the Fall! Mrs. Carter

    Junior News - Mr. Barnard

    Dear Families,

The last couple weeks of school are crazy! There's so much going on, so many reminders, so many things to do, etc. Before I get too into what to look forward to, I.E., summer, here are some highlights from last week:

We went on a walking field trip throughout Mosier on Thursday. We visited the Post Office, Library, Mosier House and took a detour through the Thirsty Woman. Glenna at the library filled us in on the history of the building and its connection to the community. Lark told us a great story about how the post office used to be a bank and when it was robbed once by a group of bank robbers, the banker was locked in the safe but the thieves were apprehended shortly afterward on the historic highway because they got a flat tire. Jan Leininger shared many stories about her family's history in Mosier and the history of the Mosier House Bed & Breakfast in the Mosier House's living room. Between our stop at the post office and library, we were caught by rain. Barry Rumsey was nice enough to let us wait it out in the Thirsty Woman. It was there I read from one of our read-aloud books, "B is for Beaver: An Oregon Alphabet". It was also a great connection to the history walk because the Thirsty Woman used to be the Mosier YWCA and is one of only two buildings to survive the fire 0f 1924. The other building is the post office. Thank you to Glenna, Lark, Jan, Cindy Hunter, and Barry for making it a fulfilling afternoon.
During Wednesday afternoon, the school watched a performance from the Phoenix Theater, a group of high school drama students from Hood River High School. They performed a variety of short skits with themes about friendship, recycling, and global awareness. All of the students loved the performance from the talented group of high schoolers.

We are continuing to work hard on our written essay for the thematic unit!

Here's what's coming up and what to look forward to:

ALL OF MY LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BACK THURSDAY! I will be charging you for lost books with real money, not $B Bucks.

ALL OF MS. HARMON'S BOOKS FROM THE SCHOOL LIBRARY ARE DUE BACK TOMORROW!
Tomorrow is a scheduled early release, Deb!

The 4th grade sleepover is scheduled for Tuesday the 8th of June. More information will follow...
The Spring performance will be Thursday, June 3rd at 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM. This is also Family Night.
The last day of school is Wednesday June 9th. The assembly will be held at 8:30 AM in the gymnasium and the family picnic will begin at 10:45 AM. 4th quarter report cards will be handed out on this day.
AT-HOME PROJECTS ARE DUE NEXT TUESDAY, JUNE 1ST! GET CRACK-A-LACKIN'!

    Senior News - Mrs. Woodward

    Greetings!
It's been quite a week! We were all sure that Spring was finally here, and Mother Nature pulled a quick one on us and sent the rain, wind and snow back!

We're gearing up for the Spring Performance and the display of our thematic Unit materials. My students turned in the rough drafts of their Tribal Research papers last week. I edited each one and then discussed needed changes or additions with my students. They have all worked very hard on these papers and have shown a lot of growth since the beginning of the year. I am sure that they have learned an immense amount about the native peoples of the Pacific Northwest through their papers, hands-on projects in the classroom, their home projects and presentations by local Native Americans. I hope to see you all here for the Spring Musical and Thematic Unit displays on the evening of June 3rd.

In Math 5, we will complete all of the lessons/concepts in our text book this week. My students worked so hard all year to master the concepts presented. I feel confident that they are prepared to enter Course I next year. We will take a final assessment later in the week !

In Reading Mastery 5, we are completing the materials in our text in addition to finishing the reading of our current novels for Literature groups. Once the novels have been completed, we'll create some original board games based on the novels. By having my students do that kind of project, I can assess what literary elements they have mastered. They will have to develop questions based on the story along with the correct answers! It's been truly amazing to watch their confidence and enjoyment of reading grow throughout the year!

As many of you already know, tomorrow evening is the Sixth Grade Sleepover here at MCS. We'll enjoy pizza and soda for dinner along with a movie, popcorn, along with indoor and outdoor games. A good time should be had by all!

Please give me a call if you have any questions or concerns about anything we're doing in the classroom!

    Sincerely,
    Sandy Woodward
